An Upgrade to Our Knowledge

One week certainly wasn’t enough for us to familiarize with Max6 tools, even though some managed to grasp it quickly by understanding the function. We moved on to this week with more creative creations, inserting new object to enhance the sound that we have been generating last week. The class seems occupied being the end of the add/drop week with new unfamiliar people. Seeing new appearance every week would be an art too I guess?

Now that most of us are on the same track, we made new inventions using the flexible software. Input new objects and commands; turning the monotonous sound to be rhythmic. We were given 1hr 20mins to do up a simple sound set-up by using certain objects that are specified by the lecturer. We worked and shared our creativity in groups to set up the assigned task given the time.

The outcome was quite simple, but even so, we learnt the usage of each individual object by implementing on the crucial part of the tree-like structure to produce the sound we desire. Our innovations led to a structure whereby a sound of a bass beat for every second plus when we press any key on the keyboard a melody will be played as long as the key is being pressed. It sounds very simple but during the process we faced some trouble for example having difficulty connecting the keys to the sound but when we are able to do so, the tone would not just end! It goes all the way and thus we had to add in object to the tree-like structure to make it a beep. Through this session itself we are able to explore and play with the object itself, producing the right noise at the right time. As an engineer, I loved to do programming but of course, people do get frustrated if we did not get the right outcome. Obviously, if it turns out to be what we want it to be; the sense of satisfaction is beyond commendable.

Counter used to increase and decrease the pitch/tone of the sound produced. We used 0 or 1 as argument for increase or decrease.

Implementing Levelmeter, line and and metro to get a repetitive beat at 500ms

Selecting the tone and implementing metronome. (Exploring the possibilities)

As per what I want to pursue for the following weeks, regarding the Silat Pengantin, I realize that the beat for the performing art can be tuned using the Max6. Except that it would be a whole lot of hardworking thoughts and process which I wouldn’t mind to go through to get the outcome; which I can roughly imagine of. I forsee I would be using a lot of the metronome feature to create the beat of the “kompang”. The counter will also be used to increase the tone of the “kompang” at certain level.

Video below will show you the kompang beat plus the rhythm that I wish to create. Happy Watching! (Start from 1:30 till end)
